Wagmatcook

With a population base of close to 820 people living in the small village of Wagmatcook First Nation, the community straddles the Bras D’or Lakes and is one of five Mi’kmaw First Nation communities of Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island, N.S.). There are approximately 210 full and part time staff in the community throughout the calendar year (including summer students) who work together for the benefit of the community.

There is a tremendous value put towards having quality services established in any community across the country and it is no different in First Nations communities. Wagmatcook Chief & Council have put a lot of effort into increasing the quality of community services to its people especially in recent years with the establishment and ongoing communication and dialogue with a number of community based initiatives such as the Wagmatcook Health Centre. Through these discussions the collective parties work together in conjunction with senior band advisors to enhance existing services to community members.
